When Gaming Handhelds were Pocketable

As Nintendo unveils the Switch 2, we can't help but notice how "handheld" gaming continues to grow beyond pocket size. The Steam Deck may have started this supersizing trend, pushing us toward larger and larger screens.

Sure, smartphone gaming changed our expectations of portable screens, but we miss the elegant compromise of dedicated gaming handhelds. Comparing the size of the Game Boy Pocket's svelte 148mm x 88mm frame or PS Vita's reasonable 182mm x 84mm dimensions meant true pocket-ready gaming with proper controls.

There must be room for a middle ground - a device with physical controls that sits between smartphone and Steam Deck. Until then, we'll keep dreaming of truly pocketable gaming's return.
